1. Courthouse Road, Maidenhead - Traffic Calming Scheme
In response to a petition and resident concerns regarding the speed of traffic in Courthouse Road, two options have been prepared for a potential traffic calming scheme and 20mph speed limit for Courthouse Road on the approaches to the Linden Avenue junction and in Oaken Grove.

Both options include a raised Zebra crossing to the north of the Oaken Grove junction, a 20mph speed limit and imprinted carriageway material in various locations to provide areas in a contrasting block paving pattern to visually reduce lane widths and encourage lower speeds. These areas would be flush with the existing carriageway level, so they would not impact on access to and from driveways or junctions.
Option A includes four build outs with cycle bypass lanes, introducing a priority system aimed at reducing traffic speed and changing driver behaviour.
Option B includes four pairs of speed cushions, as an alternative traffic calming option.

The primary focus of these proposals is to achieve speed reduction on the section of Courthouse Road in the vicinity of the junction with Linden Avenue and Oaken Grove. There are of course other factors that need to be considered as part of the development of the scheme and the consultation provides an opportunity for residents and other road users to share their views on what is and is not acceptable. For example, the impact on available space for on-street parking and potential displacement of parking are factors to be taken into consideration and may be reflected in feedback received.
Parking restrictions are not currently shown on the ‘Outline Design’ drawings, with the designs intended as concept proposals to obtain general views on the proposals. Ideally yellow lines would be installed at the cushions and on the approaches so that vehicles could traverse the cushions centrally. However, if the desire is to limit use of yellow lining then full width humps would be a better option.
The presence of build outs (if implemented) would mean a reduction in space on the highway for parking. One approach could be to introduce yellow lining at the same time as a scheme was implemented, whilst the alternative is to allow the scheme to settle down and implement lining only where absolutely necessary in order to minimise any adverse impacts on space for parking.
The build outs work by reducing the available road width so that vehicles travelling in opposing directions could not pass simultaneously. Signs and road markings would indicate who is required to give way. Those approaching build outs on their side of the road would be required to yield to approaching traffic.
20mph carriageway roundel markings are included at the start points of the proposed 20mph restriction. It would be possible to consider additional carriageway roundels throughout the scheme.
The extent of the 20mph restriction could be extended, although it does make it difficult to take a view on where it should start and end. It is likely that further traffic calming features would be required if the scheme were extended. It would appear to be unsuitable to extend the limit further than the western side of Linden Avenue junction with Belmont Park Ave / Camden Road.
Alternative proposals to the two options can be considered, and feedback from the consultation will inform any alterations to the designs or requirement for development for alternative scheme proposals. However, options with physical traffic calming measures have been demonstrated to be the most cost-effective means to reduce excess vehicle speeds.
Although it will not be possible to respond individually to responses received, all feedback will be taken into consideration and will help inform a decision on how to proceed.
