19. Grenfell Road (zebra crossing) and South Road (one-way system) consultation - Closed
In response to requests for improved pedestrian crossing facilities near the Grenfell Road junction with South Road, a potential scheme has been developed to install a zebra crossing.
To ensure that the crossing could be located on the main desire line for pedestrians and without sight lines being obstructed by trees, or the crossing causing problems for off-street parking access, the proposed location would be immediately south of the South Road junction.
The location of the crossing would require that vehicular traffic be prevented from joining Grenfell Road from South Road, through the introduction of a one-way system, running west to east on South Road between the junctions with Grenfell Road and East Road.
The reason that vehicles could not be allowed to join Grenfell Road from South Road is due to potential safety issues with vehicles exiting the junction immediately onto the crossing. Additionally, with the proposed arrangements, the footway can be extended, to enable the crossing to be located slightly further from the tree in the eastern footway, enabling adequate sight lines to and from the crossing.
In addition to the benefits of the zebra crossing for pedestrian accessibility and safety, the proposed one-way system for South Road has the further advantage of enabling an additional two on-street parking spaces to be introduced in South Road. The change would also overcome the occasional conflicts between opposing flows of traffic within this narrow section of road.
