4. Dedworth Road/Hatch Lane/Parsonage Lane: Trial mini-roundabouts scheme - Closed

In response to concerns raised by residents about congestion and road safety at the junction of Dedworth Road, Clarence Road, Hatch Lane and Parsonage Lane, the borough has taken the decision to trial a double mini-roundabout at the junction.

The existing traffic lights at the junction are approaching the end of their serviceable life and replacement and upgrade of the existing infrastructure will be necessary in the near future if the junction is to remain as a traffic light controlled site. Prior to making any decision on whether to upgrade the traffic lights, the opportunity is being taken to trial an alternative method of junction control, through the implementation of this trial scheme.

With the double mini-roundabout, the traffic lights at the junction will be switched off and bagged for the duration of the trial period. As part of the works it is necessary for the traffic island and signal pole in the mouth of the Hatch Lane junction to be removed to accommodate the mini-roundabout in this location (the island and signal pole would be reinstated if the trial scheme is removed). Temporary traffic light controlled pedestrian crossings will be installed on all four arms, located further from the junctions than at present for safety reasons.  Three of these crossings will be installed during the week commencing Monday 28 January 2019, with the crossing in Hatch Lane to be installed on Monday 4 February 2019.

The trial scheme will remain in place from the week commencing Monday 28 January 2019. Works to implement the permanent scheme are due to commence in mid-August 2019.

Traffic and pedestrian crossing surveys were carried out prior to the trial and will be repeated during the trial period to provide information which will help inform decisions on longer term arrangements for the junction.

This consultation closed on Tuesday 30 April 2019.
