Apply for housing
We are very limited in the number of people that we can offer social housing to each year because properties in the social housing sector become available infrequently. The housing options service aims to prevent households from becoming homeless in the first instance, by a range of means including negotiation with landlords, letting agents and relatives. If prevention is not possible, we will assist households to find alternative accommodation (Homelessness relief) in the private rented sector where properties are more often available.
Our Allocations Policy sets out the eligibility criteria for those who wish to join our housing register and clarifies how we prioritise the nomination of properties. There is a range of requirements to meet in order to be eligible for qualification, starting with the need to have a local connection with the borough. Local connection means that you must be able to show that you have either two years continuous residency or be in full time employment within the borough for two years immediately prior to application.
Eligible applicants are assessed to determine their housing need and are then awarded a banding level from A – D based on our housing need system, which enables us to prioritise available accommodation and assess need in terms of property size according to agreed principles.
To apply for housing you must complete the application form in full.
- You will be required to provide additional documentation as evidence (such as identification, tenancy agreements, proof of income, etc.) - we will accept scanned or photographed documents.
- We may ask you to provide original documentation on request.
- Applications for shared ownership or key worker accommodation can also be made using the same form.

An officer will review your application and will respond within 14 working days.
