Our priorities

The aim of those working in Public Health is to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population. Public health priorities for 2018-19 are: Enabling and Empowering Resilient Communities, Promoting and Supporting Good Mental Health, Social Isolation & Loneliness and Healthy Ageing.

Our strategic objectives are:

  • Health Improvement and Prevention – supporting early intervention and prevention initiatives to ensure that people make informed choices to live healthier lifestyles which add life to years and years to life.
  • Health Protection - protecting the population’s health from major incidents and other threats to health and wellbeing. Health Protection requires strong collaborative working between Public Health England (PHE), Local Authorities (LA), NHS England (NHSE)/Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) as well as other external partners e.g. Animal Health, Health and Safety Executive etc. Although local public health do not commission services in relation to health protection, there is an expectation that local teams will support this work as required.
  • Health Services - action in service planning, commission and development, clinical effectiveness, governance and efficiency.

For practitioners working within the borough a guide has been created to help you signpost residents to the right services that meet their needs. Further details of our local priorities can be found within our Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. These outline our priorities and how we intend to address them. This is supported and underpinned by our Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA).
