School nursing service (AfC)

Children's faces

The school nursing team is a public health nursing service looking after the health and wellbeing of children attending a maintained, academy or free school in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.  We consist of specialist practitioners, staff nurses and school health screeners.  The school nurse is a registered nurse with a postgraduate qualification in public health.

School nurses are the professional lead for the prevention and early intervention public health programme called the Healthy Child Programme for the age group 5-19 years.

We are here to give confidential advice and support to children, young people and their families.

What we do:

  • We take over from the health visitor on your child's fifth birthday.
  • We provide training to school staff on managing children's medical conditions in school.
  • We support healthcare planning for children with medical needs.
  • We inform children and young people who have additional health needs about healthcare services that are available to them and refer them to services if needed.
  • We offer schools advice and support on all health matters.
  • We run clinics to support families to manage night-time bedwetting.

Primary Schools:

  • We weigh and measure children at school entry and Year 6 as part of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).  We can support and advise children and families on weight management.
  • We perform vision screening at school entry.
  • We offer hearing checks if there are concerns.
  • We offer advice and support to children and their parents or carers on a wide range of health related topics.
  • We promote good health and wellbeing for school children.
  • We offer targeted health promotion to meet public health needs.

Secondary Schools:

  • We offer one-to-one confidential advice, to which young people can self-refer.  We can advise on diet, exercise, smoking, their emotional health, healthy relationships and sexual health.
  • We offer targeted health promotion to meet public health needs.
  • We work alongside other agencies to help them understand the health needs of your child.

Keeping children and young people safe:

Our school nurses play an active role in keeping children and young people safe. We work in accordance with the Berkshire Local Safeguarding Child Protection Procedures (July 2014) to support vulnerable children and young people.
